There’s nothing more compatible with the iPhone for juggling iPod-type use (music, podcasts) and cell calls (incoming and outgoing).īut they aren’t especially durable - I’ve gone through several pairs - and their soft-silicone eartips often drive me nuts. I have a love-hate relationship with Apple’s In-Ear Headphones, the premium substitutes for the basic mike-equipped earbuds it packages with its iPhone 4.

It isn’t Mac-centric, though, meaning iPhone users who sync with Windows computers also can use this version of the Ringer app.

He is also responsible for an iPhone version of Ringer that works much like the Mac app does but has fewer features. Ringer is the work of Jon Steinmetz, a Twin Cities developer. The Mac app even has a Twitter button for announcing your new creation in the twitterverse. When you export it, it is placed in your iTunes ringtone menu. Ringer is an elegantly designed app with a file menu on the left, a preview window in the upper left corner (for when you are using a video to create a ringtone), a cool animation effect in the main window when no file is selected and one-click options for adding gaps and fades to your ringtone file.

Ringer supports all file formats Apple’s own QuickTime does, including MP3, AAC, MOV, MP4 and M4V. Seeing the movies’ waveforms gives me editing precision that other ringtone editors, such as the popular and highly overrated iRingtones, lack. It took me all of 15 minutes to make three ringtones derived from three of my favorite nerdy feature films (Listen to my handiwork at tciti.es/nerdyringtones). Drag with your mouse to highlight that portion in blue, preview it to make sure you nailed the edit, and export.

Ringer is, essentially, a waveform editor that lets you easily and accurately identify the segment of a song, podcast, movie or TV show you want. Download Ringer via Apple’s Mac App Store app. I’ve been playing with a new Mac app called Ringer that makes short work of creating ringtones using audio or video on my Macs’ hard drives. It has never been easier to make ringtones for your iPhone.

The E4200 and the Valets use the same Cisco Connect software, but experienced Linksys hands can type the familiar 192.168.1.1 into their browsers (put “admin” into the password field and leave the other one blank) to access the usual configuration controls.

The router has an all-new industrial design that I like. As with the Valet routers, you can easily create a separate, secure network for guest users in your home. The E4200 has a few bonuses, such as four Gigabit Ethernet ports for fast physical networking and the option to plug a hard drive or flash drive into a USB port to create network storage - and even to stream video from that storage device. These and other tweaks are aimed at creating a wireless nirvana for heavy Wi-Fi users, such as hardcore gamers and those streaming high-definition video across their networks. The E4200 is a “dual-band” router (unlike the Valet) operating at both 2.4 and 5 gigahertz, with a maximum theoretical speed of 450 megabits per second on the latter. Handheld gadgets, such as an iPhone and an iPod Touch, linked right up, too. In testing the latter category, I found myself connecting reliably to my network from the far corners of the newsroom, even from behind a wall, using an Apple MacBook Air and a Lenovo IdeaPad U260. With the E4200, Cisco aims to make wireless connections faster, to allow more devices to use the wireless networks simultaneously and to maximize coverage.
